XOLOITZCUINTLE: HISTORY

Xoloitzcuintle also called Mexican hairless dog. It is one of the oldest breeds in the world.

Long ago, the natives were fed with meat of this dog. They saw him as the earthly representative of the god “Xolotl”, which gave it its name. It was used to rinse the souls of the dead to their eternal peace.

XOLOITZCUINTLE - history

From the North East Asia to Mexico were brought by the Aztecs, but it is assumed that originates from Turkey.

In North America there are several kennels, but in addition, the breed is slowly disappearing.

The American Kennel Club does not recognize Xoloitzcuintle but it is recognized in Canada and Mexico.

XOLOITZCUINTLE: APPEARANCE AND ANATOMY

Xoloitzcuintle is very harmonious and graceful dog. It has a harmonious proportion, often with a large skull.

The main feature is the complete absence of coat. The attitude is reminiscent with the Manchester Terrier breed.

Dog is elegant, with a particular tuft on top of bald head. It occurs in a variety of sizes, which are: standard, miniature and dwarf.

Standard height is 18 to 23 inches, the dwarf is from 10 to 14 inches, while the miniature reaches a height of 14 to 18 inches.

Xoloitzcuintle standard can have a weight of 20 to 30 lb, a miniature of 13 to 22 lb, and dwarf 9 to 13 lb.

SKULL: lupus type, broad, strong, very elegant.

NOSE: dog with a dark skin has a black nose, while a dog with a golden-yellow color of the skin has pink nose.

MUZZLE: straight, strongly developed jaws.

TEETH: closes in the form of scissors.

EYES: medium size, almond shaped, vivid, color adapts to skin color.

EARS: large, long, expressive, pricked.

NECK: long, arched, carried high.

SKIN: on the neck rigid and elastic, well fitting.

BECK: line is absolutely straight.

TAIL: long, thin, decorated with a few hairs, set on low, coming to the hocks, tapering at the top. When moving stands tall, when stands is suspended and ends with a hook.

Xoloitzcuintle is known for bare skin and therefore requires special care. He needs regular bathing and massaging with adequate cream, because the skin need to remain soft.
